How Much Should an E-commerce Website Cost?

APEX UNITED · Editorial guide ·

Use scope and total ownership costs to compare quotes. A price without assumptions is not a useful estimate.

Short answer

A useful estimate starts with what the store must do: catalog complexity, buying journey, languages, content, integrations, migration and support. Separate one-time delivery from recurring platform and operational costs. This guide gives a budgeting framework, not a current market price list or an Apex quotation.

Define the store you are estimating

A simple catalog and a store with configurable products, migration, wholesale rules and stock integrations are different projects. Document product and variant counts, the quality of the source data, languages, markets and fulfillment process.

Specify the first launch milestone and what can wait. Adding every possible feature makes quotes difficult to compare and can obscure the actual business priority.

Separate the cost categories

Cost categoryWhat to includeQuestion for the quote
BuildDiscovery, design, development and testingWhich pages, features and acceptance checks?
Content & dataProduct information, images, translations and importWho prepares, approves and uploads them?
ConnectionsPayment, delivery, inventory or other systemsWhich integration, API and supported workflow?
Recurring operationHosting, renewals, support and provider feesWhat recurs, when, and who pays it?

Check payment and integration assumptions

Payment provider fees are separate from extension costs and depend on the provider’s terms. Verify country, currency and available features directly with the provider. Do not assume a gateway or stock connection is available merely because a platform supports extensions.

For integrations, request the exact systems, expected data flow, failure handling and responsible owner. Include access and third-party approval dependencies in the schedule.

Compare equivalent deliverables

Ask each supplier to separate included work, exclusions, recurring charges and change requests. Include mobile checkout testing, account ownership, training and post-launch responsibility. A visually similar storefront can hide very different data, integration and support work.

Do not compare a theme installation with a discovery-led custom journey as if their scope were identical. Conversely, a focused template-based build may be entirely appropriate when it satisfies the requirements.

Build a planning estimate

Use: one-time delivery + content/data preparation + setup/integration + expected recurring costs for the chosen planning period. Keep advertising spend, inventory, fulfillment and transaction-variable costs visible as separate business costs.

Attach assumptions, currency, validity date and contingencies to each quote. If a requirement is unknown, mark it for discovery instead of inserting an arbitrary figure. The cheapest or most expensive quote is not automatically the best fit.

Practical example — hypothetical

Hypothetical: two quotes both say “online store.” One excludes product import and payment setup; the other includes an approved catalog, testing and training. Normalize their scope before comparing the total. No sample amount here represents a market rate.

Your next step: practical checks

  1. Describe catalog, languages and purchase requirements.
  2. Identify content and data preparation ownership.
  3. Confirm payment and integration feasibility.
  4. Separate build, recurring and variable business costs.
  5. Request a dated, itemized scope with acceptance criteria.

Sources & scope

This is an Apex editorial decision framework, not a diagnosis of your business or a report of client outcomes. Technical references support the specific measurement or platform points; the recommendations remain context-dependent.

If the problem needs implementation

A scoped website and e-commerce engagement can turn this brief into a comparable proposal. First clarify the requirements; a sales conversation should not replace a transparent scope.
